      Substrate Preparation<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Although Dowsil silicone sealants possess excellent bond strength, maximum adhesion is only attained on surfaces that are clean and dry<\/strong>.
      Contaminants such as dirt, grease, water, tar, or rust act as release agents and prevent the formation of durable bonds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      It is strongly recommended that wet or unclean surfaces be properly prepared<\/strong> before applying sealants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        \n
      • Wipe contaminated surfaces with a clean, oil-free cloth.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • Rewipe the surface with a suitable cleaner or industrial solvent, such as IPA, mineral spirits, naphtha, or ketones<\/strong>.\n
          \n
        • Note:<\/em> Do not clean surfaces with detergent or soap. Soap residue may act as a release agent.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n
        • Roughen rubber surfaces with sandpaper.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
        • Perform a spot check<\/strong> to determine adhesion for each application.\n
            \n
          • Bond strength will increase as the sealant cures.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

            How to Apply<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

            Apply Dowsil adhesives\/sealants to one of the prepared surfaces, then quickly cover with the other substrate to be bonded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            Upon exposure to moisture, the freshly applied material will \u201cskin over<\/strong>\u201d in about 5\u201310 minutes<\/strong> (depending on product) at room temperature and 50% relative humidity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

              \n
            • Any tooling should be completed before<\/strong> this skin forms.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
            • The surface can be easily tooled with a spatula.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

              Use of Primer<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

              For maximum adhesion<\/strong>, the use of a Dowsil primer<\/strong> is recommended.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                \n
              1. After solvent cleaning, apply a thin coat<\/strong> of Dowsil primer by wiping, brushing, or spraying.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
              2. At normal room conditions (temperature and 50% relative humidity), allow the primer to air dry for 5\u201330 minutes<\/strong>.\n
                  \n
                • The primer cures by contact with air moisture; low humidity will require a longer drying time.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n
                • Determine the required drying time for the specific area before use.\n
                    \n
                  • Primer that has cured extensively will no longer promote adhesion<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
                  • As a general rule, avoid drying times longer than 6 hours<\/strong> at normal conditions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

                    Cure Time<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

                    After skin formation, curing continues inward from the surface.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                      \n
                    • In 24 hours<\/strong> (at room temperature and 50% relative humidity), Dowsil adhesive\/sealant will cure to a depth of approximately 3 mm<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
                    • Deep sections or areas with restricted access to atmospheric moisture will require longer cure times<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
                    • Cure time is extended at lower humidity levels<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

                      Since sealants cure by reaction with air moisture, keep containers tightly sealed<\/strong> when not in use.
                      A plug of cured material may form in the tip of a tube or cartridge during storage\u2014this is easily removed and does not affect the remaining contents<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                      Compatibility<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

                      Some Dowsil adhesives\/sealants release a small amount of acetic acid<\/strong> during cure.
                      This may cause corrosion<\/strong> on some metallic parts or substrates, especially:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
