Cleaning of the Landing Gear
There are tremendous stresses induced in the landing gear of an aircraft and it is critical that they do not fail under these high stresses. The main concern is water entrapment, which can cause parts to fracture when water freezes at higher altitudes. Vertrel™ has been used extensively in maintenance programs to clean critical landing gear parts such as wheel bearings, bushing valves, and other critical mechanical parts. Vertrel™ specialty fluids are specified as the sole solvent to be used on the sealed system on the space shuttle by NASA.
Vertrel™ specialty fluids have been used extensively for servicing oxygen systems. The parts that are cleaned using Vertrel™ are critical for ensuring a stable oxygen supply in the aircraft.
Defluxing/Cleaning of PCBs/Electronics
Critical circuit boards and electronics are used in the aerospace industry and the failure of any of these can have disastrous consequences. Vertrel™ is often the first choice of solvent to be used to deflux and clean the printed circuit boards (PCBs) after the soldering operations are completed.
Vertrel™ specialty fluids have been used as a heat transfer fluid in the power semiconductor or IGBT space. Power semiconductors are often used to design the microwave heating systems for airplanes. In such cases Vertrel™ specialty fluids are used to ensure hot meals on a flight.
Drilling of Micro-Holes
Vertrel™ specialty fluids have been used as a lubricant and a heat transfer fluid during the drilling of micro-holes during aircraft wing manufacturing. The main function performed by Vertrel™ is to carry away the heat during the drilling operation to prevent overheating of the part because an overheated part can lead to fracture. Using Vertrel™ also promotes longer life of the cutting tool. In addition to the cutting fluid being volatile, it does not leave behind an oily residue that would require cleaning after drilling.
